Irritible Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is also known as spastic colon, spastic colitis and nervous bowel. It is usually a disorder of the large intestine although other parts of the intestinal tract may be affected. The symptoms may include: Abdominal pain, cramps, muscle spasms, bloating, and variations in bowel movements, alternating between constipation and diarrhoea and a feeling of urgency. Irritable bowel syndrome is not a disease although the symptoms maybe very distressing. It is also very common and affects one in four people at some time in their life.
Clinical hypnotherapy offers a holistic approach to IBS by taking into consideration, the patients’ stress levels, lifestyle and diet. During hypnotherapy people learn to relax deeply which helps to normalise the movements of the bowel. Several studies have impressively documented the value of hypnotherapy with IBS.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) gives guidance to the NHS on effective treatments. In February 2008 guidance for GPs and consultants was published endorsing hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), including chronic IBS.
